BRM H16 F1
The BRM H16 was a 16-cylinder "H" engine (formed by two sets of eight flat-engine cylinders superimposed and connected) developed by the British Racing Motors Formula 1 team for the 1966 season. It was designed to be an innovative, high-power engine, but was hampered by weight, complexity, and reliability issues, culminating in its only victory at the 1966 United States Grand Prix, driven by Jim Clark in a Lotus 43, which used the engine as a replacement.
Features and Challenges
Innovative Design: The H16 engine was a complex and unique design, with two inline eight-cylinder "engines" one above the other, and the crankshafts connected by gears to generate 16 cylinders in an "H" shape.
Heavy Weight: The engine was significantly heavier than its V8 and V12 competitors, which affected the car's performance and reliability.
Complexity: The system was so complex that rebuilding an engine could take a team of mechanics weeks, making development difficult.
Power and RPM Range: The H16 delivered high power (around 420 hp) but with a very narrow RPM range, making it difficult for drivers to control.
Legacy
Risk Challenge: The H16 project reflects the spirit of innovation and risk-taking in engineering at the time, which aimed to push the limits of what was possible in Formula 1 engines.
Engineering Icon: Despite its failure in terms of reliability, the BRM H16 is remembered as an example of innovative engineering and a fascinating chapter in F1 history, especially for its distinctive engine sound.
Jim Clark's Victory
Jim Clark achieved the only victory for an H16 engine in Formula 1 with the Lotus 43 at the 1966 US Grand Prix, using the unique engine developed by BRM. The H16 engine, with 16 cylinders and an H-shaped configuration, was BRM's attempt to comply with F1's new displacement regulations, but it was a long and complex engine that only won once.
Clark won the 1966 United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen in his Lotus-BRM 43, a significant victory for the BRM H16 engine, which only ever won once in Formula 1. Despite facing issues with his Lotus 43's engine, including an oil leak that was fixed during a delay, Clark dominated the race after surviving early challenges from other drivers. Jochen Rindt and John Surtees finished second and third in their Cooper-Maserati.
