THE FOUR SEASONS SONNETS
Concerto No. 4 in F minor, Op. 8 No. 4, RV 297, L’Inverno (“Winter”)
1.
To tremble from cold in the frozen snow,
in the severe blowing of a horrid wind;
To run, stamping one's feet all the time,
our teeth chattering in the extreme cold;
2.
To pass peaceful contented days before the fire
as the rain pours down outside.
3.
To walk on the ice slowly and cautiously,
for fear of tripping and falling.
Turn suddenly, slip, fall to the ground.
Then run hard across the ice
until it cracks and breaks up;
We feel Sirocco, Boreas and all the winds course through
the home despite the locked and bolted doors.
This is winter, but nonetheless it brings its own delights!
